QMJHL Draft Contest for the Kids

(Sydney, NS) - When the puck drops on the QMJHL Draft and Annual Session on June 4, 2008 there will be more to cheer for than meets the eye. Through a special initiative being spearheaded by the Draft Committee, in co-operation with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board (CBVRSB), school children in the local area will have the chance to be part of the action of the draft - including having their photo taken with the number one draft pick.

Local children are being asked to submit a drawing/colouring showing that you can have fun while being physically active. The “Contest for the Kids – Being Fit is Fun” is open to school children between grades three to six. Entrants will have the chance to win four VIP tickets and seating at the Draft on Saturday, June 7, 2008. They will also receive a Cape Breton Screaming Eagles jersey and have their photo taken with the first overall draft pick.

“We are trying to showcase that the Draft is a community event and one of our goals is to get young people involved so they can enjoy this experience. This is possible because of the cooperation we are receiving from the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board in getting the word out to the children,” says Anita DeLazzer, co-chair of the Draft Committee. “By introducing this contest our hope is that the community, in particular the children will learn about the draft and reinforce the importance of being physically fit and how doing so can be great fun too!”

“This project is a great way for the School Board to build on the great partnership we have with the Cape Breton Post Newspaper in Education Program,” says David Crane, coordinator of program services CBVRSB. “The contest will be circulated to all teachers and principals within the Board covering grades three to six and I encourage each and every one to make this a class project and submit their entries. This is a chance to show off the great talent of our students!”

“The work of the children will be displayed during the Draft and will certainly add to the atmosphere,” says Donnie Morrison, co-chair of the Draft Committee. “We are very excited to include the community in such a special way and hope that people will come to the Draft to see first-hand what takes place with hockey and to see the artwork of our youth.”

All entries (one per child) must be received on white, 8.5 × 11 sized paper and should include the child’s name, address, phone number and school on the back. The contest will open on Thursday, May 8, 2008 and all entries must be received no later than 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008. Entries can be dropped off at the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Administration Office, 481 George Street, 4th Floor, Centre 200, Sydney, NS, or mailed to P.O. Box 8, Sydney, NS, B1P 6G9. Entries sent through the mail must be received by the deadline noted above. One winner will be chosen from all entries however, all entries will be displayed during the Draft.
