Rocket Stop Eagles Streak
The P.E.I. Rocket raced out to a 3-0 lead and held off a late charge as they edged the visiting Screaming Eagles 4-3 on Saturday night in Charlottetown.
On a night when the Rocket honoured the former Charlottetown Islanders by wearing replica jerseys they jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead to end the Screaming Eagles four game winning streak.
Jan Kana scored twice while Lucas MacKinley and Chris Doyle added single markers to pace the Rocket attack. Nick MacNeil, Joey Haddad and Alex Lamontagne replied for the Screaming Eagles who finished 2-1 on their three-game road trip.
Doyle opened the scoring with his 25th goal of the season on two-man advantage at the 8:36 mark. On the same power play at 9:52 Kana put home his 19th of the year to give the home side a 2-0 lead. MacKinley found the net with his 12th of the year at 18:50 as the Rocket took a three-goal advantage after the first period.
The Screaming Eagles would get on the board at the 2;39 mark of the second period on a power play. Dean Ouellet with his first of two assists on the night helped out on the play.
Joey Haddad continued his hot steak by scoring his 27th of the season against his former team with an unassisted effort at 3:56. Haddad has now scored in six straight games and in eight of his last nine overall. During this streak the 19 year-old has scored 11 goals.
Kana would strike shorthanded at 18:04 of the second restoring the Rocket’s two-goal advantage firing a wrist shot over the should of Marek Benda, who replaced started Olivier Roy to begin the second period.
It would stay that way until 17:41 of the third period when Lamontagne blasted home his 10th of the season past P.E.I. goaltender Marc-Antoine Gelinas. Chris Culligan and Ouellet picked up assists on the play.
The Screaming Eagles pulled Benda in favour of an extra attacker, but were unable to come up with the equalizer.
