Eagles Down Mooseheads
Dean Ouellet scored twice and Olivier Roy stopped 36 of 37 shots as the Screaming Eagles beat the Halifax Mooseheads 5-1 before 8371 fans at the Metro Centre on Thursday night.
Ouellet became the all-time leading scorer in Screaming Eagles history with his 39th and 40th goals of the season. He surpasses Kevin Asselin on the Screaming Eagles all-time scoring list. He now has 249 points two more than Asselin. He also became the first Screaming Eagles player to register back-to-back 40-goal seasons.
Chris Culligan, Alex lamontagne and Joey Haddad also scored for the Screaming Eagles, who have won three straight games.
With the win in goal, Roy tied Peter Delmas of the Lewiston Maineiacs for the most wins by a 16 year-old in QMJHL history, at 23 each. Delmas set the mark last season.
Guillaume Monast scored the lone goal for Halifax, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Ouellet wasted little time in entering the record books by beating Halifax starting goaltender Pierre-Olivier Pelletier at the 8:48 mark of the first period with help from Robert Slaney and Alex Lamontagne.
Culligan gave the Screaming Eagles a 2-0 lead at the 13:50 mark of the first period with his 19th goal of the season. Again Slaney assisted on the play.
In the second period, Lamontagne ripped home his 9th of the year on the power play at the 8:00 mark to give the Screaming Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Halifax would get back in the game on their own power play at 10:33 when Guillaume Monast put his 6th of the season past Olivier Roy.
The Screaming Eagles regained their three goal advantage when Joey Haddad scored his 25th goal of the year past Pelletier. It was the fourth game in a row Haddad has found the net and his ninth goal in the past seven games. That goal also sent Pelletier to the Moosehead’s bench in favour of Mark Yetman.
Ouellet welcomed Yetman to the game by potting his second goal of the game and his 40th of the year at 13:32 to give the Screaming Eagles a 5-1 lead.
They would take that lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes. In the third, the Screaming Eagles choked off the Mooseheads at every turn to stymie any idea of a comeback.
Besides Ouellet’s big night. Culligan and Lamontagne had solid performances with a goal and two assists. The win gave the Screaming Eagles the season series with a 4-2-2-0 record.
The win was the 34th of the year for Cape Breton, and moves them within three points of second place Halifax in the Eastern Division and four back of first place Saint John.
The Screaming Eagles now head to Charlottetown for two games to complete the road trip against the P.E.I. Rocket on Friday and Saturday night.
Friday’s game is available on Eastlink Television and the Telus Webcast at 7:00pm and on radio on CJCB AM 1270 beginning at 6:30pm with the pre-game show.
