Screaming Eagles Drop Wildcats
Joey Haddad scored twice and Dean Ouellet tied the Screaming Eagles all-time point scoring record as the Screaming Eagles defeated the Moncton Wildcats 4-1 before 4732 fans at Centre 200 on Sunday afternoon. It was the second straight win for the Screaming Eagles who improved to 33-21-3-3 on the season, moving them four points up on fourth place Lewiston and three points back of second place Halifax in the Eastern Division.
Dean Ouellet and Robert Slaney also scored for the Screaming Eagles, while former Eagle Mark Barberio scored on a Moncton power play in the third period to spoil Olivier Roy’s bid for a second straight shutout.
Ouellet put the Screaming Eagles up 1-0 on a first period power play at 5:43, ripping his 38th goal of the season past Charles Lavigne in the Wildcat net. Chris Culligan and Jordan Clendenning picked up assists on the play.
It stayed that way until the 13:23 mark of the second period when Haddad pounced on a rebound near the Moncton net and slid his 23rd past Lavigne. Nicolas Chouinard and Clendenning assisted on the play.
Haddad struck again, this time shorthanded with a fine individual effort by stripping the puck from Lavigne behind the Moncton net and wrapping his 24th goal of the season into the open net to give the Screaming Eagles a 3-0 advantage at 16:03 of the second period.
In the third, Moncton would end Roy’s shutout streak when Barberio would fire his 8th of the season past him on the power play at 9:16. That’s as close as the Wildcats would come. Slaney finished the scoring off with an empty net marker at 19:38 from Ouellet and Culligan.
The two points on the day tied Ouellet for the Screaming Eagles all-time scoring lead with Kevin Asselin. They both have 247 points.
Ouellet will have a chance to break the stalemate on Thursday night in Halifax as the Screaming Eagles begin a three-game in three-night road trip. The Screaming Eagles won’t return to home ice until Saturday, March 8th, when they face the Saint John Sea Dogs.
