Roy Shuts Down Huskies

Rookie goaltender Olivier Roy stopped 21 shots as the Screaming Eagles blanked the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 2-0 before 4570 fans on Saturday night at Centre 200.

It was the third shutout of the season for the 16 year-old native from Amqui, Quebec tying him with Ondrej Pavelec for the most shutouts by a Screaming Eagles rookie goalie.

Both teams entered the third period in a 0-0 tie in what was one of the best games played at Centre 200 this season.

Jordan Clendenning broke the stalemate at the 6:02 mark of third period as he beat Maxim Gougeon in the Huskies net with a drive to the stick side. Nicolas Chouinard and Francis Meilleur picked up assists on the play.

Joey Haddad would provide insurance with help from Chris Culligan and Robert Slaney at the 9:53 mark on a powerplay, by surprising Gougeon with a shot from the right circle.

From that point on it was up to Roy and the stingy Eagles defence to hold the fort on their way to their 32nd win of the season.

The victory will keep the Screaming Eagles in third place in the Eastern Division, five points back of second place Halifax and seven behind first place Saint John.

Dean Ouellet, failed to pick up a point and remains two points behind Kevin Asselin on the all-time Screaming Eagles scoring list.Ouellet has 245 career points and Asselin 247.

He’ll have another chance to close in on that mark or perhaps surpass it on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm as the Screaming Eagles host Moncton at Centre 200.
