UPDATE: Culligan Cares Campaign Grows To Over $20,000

Sydney - What started out as a single donation to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation's Cancer Expansion project by Screaming Eagles captain Chris Culligan, has quickly grown into a major fundraiser.

In December, as Culligan was on the verge of becoming the Screaming Eagles all-time point leader, he committed to donating $1 to the Cancer Centre for each career point he accumulated. A sizeable donation considering the 250+ points he had already accumulated during his 5 season career with the Screaming Eagles.

“Before the season began I let the team know that I was interested in doing something that would have a positive impact in my hometown. I have lived here for 20 years and I have learned a lot about life and hockey and I think this is a unique way to give something back,” said Culligan.

When Culligan first mentioned his plan to donate $1 per point, the amount was quickly matched by nearly a dozen local businesses and individuals, including former teammate and good friend James Sheppard. Since then, with promotional help from radio stations CJCB 1270, MAX 98.3, & 94.9 The Cape, the number of matched donations has grown to 35 – a number radio station manager Alan Peddle would like to see continue to grow.

“At the age of 20, Chris has shown incredible leadership and maturity,” said Alan Peddle of Cape Breton Radio. “It is our pleasure to assist Chris in growing this project and helping the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation come closer to reaching their two million dollar Cancer Centre Expansion goal.”

Raising money for the Cancer Centre Expansion is nothing new for Cape Breton Radio; they recently helped raise over $270,000 for the Cancer Centre Expansion during their Cape Breton Cares Radiothon.
